I'm sorry, but you got some pretty poor answers here. Surfing is an ocean sport, that should only be practiced by persons who are already competent ocean swimmers. Swimming in a pool is neat, but it's not ocean swimming, with undertows, rip tides and sometimes BIG waves. I have seen lots of great pool swimmers get rescued. So, my first tip on how to surf is to be at home in the ocean. There are way too many dangerous people in the water now. They are a danger to themselves and other surfers, don't join their ranks.

I understand that not everybody is a big wave surfer, but even wiping out on small waves can lead to a 'hold down', disorientation and possible panic to those who are not at home in the ocean. You will surf in water that is over your head in depth, and even tethered to your board with a leash, as a beginer surfer, there can be dire consequences. A broken leash and a strong undertow could leave you with a swim of upwards of two hundred yards in heavy surf. Those folks who said you don't have to swim well must only surf in waist deep water. I started surfing in 1966, after years and years of swiming in the ocean and back bays. I was a beach lifeguard and made dozens of rescues, and a few 'recoveries' of the ones who didn't make it. I am shocked that people who claim to be surfers could be so naive as to think that ocean swimming isn't the primary prerequisite for surfing.

To answer your question directly, you need to learn to swim well. With lessons, in a pool; that could take anywhere from weeks to months. We don't know your athletic ability. After mastering still water swimming, you need to spend time playing in the ocean. Body surfing, swimming short distances and gradually learning how to 'feel' undertows and rips and cross beach currents. My grand children all started at about 5 or 6 to build up their ocean skills and confidence. It took them a couple years to be safe in the water. A fairly athletic adult should be able to progress much more quickly.
Once you are at home in the surf, start surfing lessons.

Just a point of clarification, You don’t really have to be that great of a swimmer to surf. In fact, you are really using a combination of different muscles to surf than you would to swim. Sure the arm motions are similar, but because you are trying to also keep the board as level as possible while you are paddling (this will make more sense when you start understanding surfing and paddle technique – see link below), you are also using certain back and abdominal muscles. In fact, most surfers I know aren’t the best swimmers. Although it’s a bad idea to go surfing not knowing how to swim at all, I’d hardly think you need swimming lessons just to surf normal everyday waves. I would focus your lessons on surfing itself.

it depends on how quickly you learn. Tho swimming lessons in a pool helps. Swimming in the ocean with other factors like sharks, sting rays, super fast jelly fishes and rip currents, will be something else to remember. The only stroke that helps is the free style for paddling and floating when you fall off the surfboard.

Surf fishing right?

Try plastic worms and grubs. Live bait always works, too. Like King of Fishing said, mullet, crabs, and shrimp.

Not familar with that area though (SoCal, West Coast gal here) but I figure all beaches work the same.

Surf Fishing is all about targeting fish that make a living from food that is stirred up by the waves, and tide movement. These fish often dig in the sand or mud for crabs etc. Essentially scavengers!

You need to be able to cast your line approx 40-50 yards, or behind the breaking waves if possible. A local tackle shop might be able to advise you on the best sinker to attach to your line, as the sinker does most of the work when casting out.

Do a search on You Tube as well.

Hey.

They can indeed this program is used a lot, it opens a specific port from your work places ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) and you will get into trouble as this is quite easily traced.

Good Luck.
